I was so excited and I was revisiting my bucket list for the post lockdown period. Like any common person, during this lockdown time, I have had my own moments of frustrations, happiness, philosophical, optimism, and pessimism. Few of them are encouraging and few of them were discouraging. What we are hearing around us is opinionated information influencing us to form our own opinions. As we know, we are all becoming representatives of Facebook and WhatsApp universities to spread the news.
I was so curious to know how decision-makers think with actual data before making any decisions at this point. They are also human beings like us but being an elected representative, they are forced to think beyond personal emotions to make decisions for all the people. During this thought process, I saw Dr. Sudhakar, Minister of Medical Education of our state on the television. As the youngest minister in the cabinet, he briefs us everyday about the latest updates. Suddenly, the thought of talking to him as the Babeknows representative struck me. In case you didn’t know, Sudhakar sir and I hail from the same place Chikkaballapur. I had campaigned for him during the last election. During the entire campaign, he treated me like his little sister with utmost care. I was impressed by his dynamic, never-dying attitude to achieve anything he truly believes in. While campaigning, I remember him sharing his dreams about making Chikkaballapur an ideal constituency. Knowing him in-person gave me a little lenience to dial Sudhakar Anna. Fortunately, he got few minutes to talk and it was good enough to have a brief conversation.
There were so many questions to ask…like, does the lockdown really help in the disappearance of Corona? what do we do if the Coronavirus doesn’t go? What changes will we see once we get back to our lives? Aren’t you worried about getting infected since you are interacting with many positive patients? and so on… he was patiently listening and waiting for his chance to answer. ahahaha. Then he began to explain.
“We have to survive and live… both are important. If there is no lockdown, it is difficult to survive. If we continue the lockdown, it will become difficult to live. Hence we are monitoring the situation and analyzing the available facts to restart life while taking necessary precautions. If this situation continues, we have to learn to live with the virus with care, common-sense, and each other’s coöperation. I know it is not easy but we have limited options”.
His answer gave me a different perspective about the administrators situation…just before asking an additional question, he continued.
“This is the entire world’s problem…not just our state’s problem. When the rest of the world is suffering a lot, we were able to control the damage successfully. Now we are focusing on reopening the state cautiously. Life will not be the same once we resume back. Our attitudes, hygiene habits, awareness needs a complete overhaul for a better future. We are taking utmost conscious care in each of our efforts”. He spoke like a true leader. I could sense his compassion, commitment, and dedicated effort to sail us through this hard time.
To change the mood of our discussion, I asked him “all of us are staying back and spending some good time with our families… aren’t you worried about meeting so many people on a daily basis who may spread the virus to you without their knowledge?” I was amazed by his answer. He answered with a quote.
“Warships are built not to park in a harbor but to sail through the sea battle”. When I decided to join politics, I let aside my personal interests for the benefit of people. During testing times like these, I can’t sit back and hide for my safety instead of helping the public. Also, I am not trying to be brave and stupid. As a doctor, I’m well aware and know how we can handle this situation with care and concern. Don’t listen to any rumors and always listen to authorities”. After his answer, I didn’t have much to ask him about his work… so I switched the topic to his personal interests, post-Corona bucket list and so on..
