Trust me, the lockdown has actually proven to be healthy for all of us. During normal times, a meal or two in a day would consist of restaurant food or fast food. Now we have a lot of time in hand and are able to make use of this time by cooking tasty meals which are healthy and cost-effective. We are no longer dependent on packaged foods because not everything is easily available at nearby stores. I witnessed my mom preparing Dosa and Idli batter at home instead of getting packed batter from the store. I am also seeing many people churn yogurt at home and make buttermilk, lassi and fruit juice than buy a readymade tetra pak. Software professionals, whose lives are very busy prefer instant food over homemade food and I don’t blame them. My North Indian friends were dependent on frozen Rotis and ready to eat curries, but has changed too.
I remember when we were kids, grandma would cut pieces of potatoes, add salt, and dry them in the sun and that’s how potato chips were made. It was quite a task for me and my cousins to guard these chips from birds. HAHA. 🤣 They not only tasted better but were also healthier than the packaged snacks we have today. To be honest, packaged foods pose a lot of health risks, They are salted and filled with preservatives to increase their shelf life. They also contain an excessive amount of sugar that can lead to a number of life-threatening diseases. Nothing can compare to the taste of homemade food.
Slightly off-topic, but I think we can all relate to this. I recall an instance where I had gone to Mauritius for a song shoot in my film Vallakottai. Me being a shopaholic, I headed straight to shopping post pack up around 6 PM, but I was shocked to see all the supermarkets and shops being shut down. I asked around and that’s when I found out that the shops were closed because the people of Mauritius believed that they needed to allot equal time to their personal and professional life. It was beautiful! Hearing this really took me aback. All this while, we would postpone every celebration to the weekend but life is fickle, and things can change in the blink of an eye. Thus, I believe in enjoying the present.
Everybody in this world is busy, including me, but I request you all to consider this. Even after the lockdown is lifted completely, I’m sure we can take time out for our families, have at least one meal along with them and try out new tasty dishes every day. Eating home-cooked food every time, will not only boost your immune system but also your mood. It is great for your overall physical and mental health in the long run.
